Trip Details

Your trip begins at the Big Salmon Lake put in and you will paddle almost the entire distance of Big Salmon before finding the portage on the far shore. Take careful note of its position on your map as there is an island blocking view of it depending on your angle of approach. The first portage is a modest half kilometer or so on a well-marked trail through the forest. Make sure that you follow the portage signs to ensure that you don't accidentally end up on the hiking trail. Your goal is to end up in Labelle Lake.

Labelle is a smaller lake and thus represents a short paddle across to the next portage. This portage is extremely easy at only about 200m. Basically, you walk up a hill and down the other side to reach Big Clear Lake.

From Big Clear, paddle North across the majority of the body of the large lake. The far shore of Big Clear is outside the park and thus populated by cottages. You also may encounter powered boats on Big Clear so be mindful of wake to ensure that you do not end up going for a swim.

Once you reach the portage to Devil Lake you will notice an interesting marsh beside the portage filled with a variety of flowers and plants. (pictured above) The marsh is a small labyrinth of waterways that are fun to explore before beginning your portage. The last portage for the day is the longest and most difficult at about 900m. Expect to go up and down through varied terrain; don't be afraid to take it slow through the steep portions. You will eventually come across a small lake, do not be fooled, this is not Devil Lake, the trail continues to curve to the right and follows down a small ravine. Follow this ravine while being mindful of your steps as this is the most treacherous section of trail on the portage. Once through the ravine, you will reach Devil Lake. Paddle around the bend to the west and the campsites will be in view.

For the return trip, you can either retrace your path to return or choose one of several other routes through the park. (Consult your map for details on these routes)
